Computer Repair Basics

Owning a computer is a valuable part of many different tasks you accomplish. Whether it amounts to checking email, paying bills, surfing the net, going to school or some other need, the computer is an important tool that makes it possible to get these things done. Knowing the basics of computer repair doesn't mean you have to be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your machinery but that you should have some knowledge that allows you to accomplish some basic repairs on your own.

Restart or Reset

A common repair involves knowing when to restart versus reset your computer. Installing new programs and other update functions often require you to restart your computer for them to take effect. Modern systems will usually display a message asking you do want to restart. A reset may require you to manually adjust settings back to default settings.

Streamline Startup

When your computer is starting slow or taking a long time to load the programs that start, you may have too many applications running at one time. You can repair this problem easily by adjusting the startup settings so that programs you do not readily need are not automatically turned on when the computer first powers up.

Shut Down Properly

As tempting as it may be to shut down the computer by pushing the power button and simply turning it off, there is only one way that you should turn your computer off and that is by closing all of the programs and exiting through the shut down menu. Failure to follow these steps can result in the need for costly computer repair by a professional.

Use Antivirus Protection

Protecting your computer from viruses, spyware and other malicious programs is what an antivirus program does. This is exceptionally important when your computer is connected to the Internet. If you cannot afford to buy an antivirus program, you can get a free program online. Antivirus protection must be updated to minimize computer repair from damage caused by newly created viruses. Scan your computer regularly and update your antivirus program regularly to accomplish this.

Delete Temporary Files

The Internet is a great tool that provides a wealth of information. When you surf the web, however, there are many temporary files that are stored on your computer. These files take up vital space but are not necessary to keep. You can have these files removed periodically or manually delete them routinely yourself.

Perform Routine Maintenance

One way to avoid having to make some computer repair is to run routine maintenance options such as the disk defragmenter and scan disk programs. You free up space on your hard drive by removing needless files and cleaning up hard drive sectors. When this maintenance is done regularly, it helps your computer to run faster and more efficiently.
